Man arrested after barricading himself in Bradenton home with kids inside, police say

Police and a SWAT team were called to a home on Tuesday morning in Bradenton after an armed man barricaded himself inside a home with a woman and four children, the Bradenton Police Department said.

Malcom McAllister, 31, of Palmetto was arrested following a two-hour standoff with police.

Bradenton police responded to McAllister’s girlfriend’s home at 6:46 a.m. Tuesday to a reported of a domestic disturbance.

McAllister had barricaded himself inside the home where an infant was sleeping and brandished a firearm to the officers who first arrived on scene, police spokeswoman Meredith Frameli said.

Police, as a result, pulled back and waited for SWAT team to arrive.

A woman and five children were at the home at the time, Frameli said. The woman and four children were able to walk out unharmed.

Soon after the SWAT team arrived, McAllister walked out of the home, unarmed, Frameli said. Officers then rushed inside to get the baby.

No one was injured.

A firearm was found in the home, and it had been reported stolen in Hillsborough County, Frameli said.

McAllister is charged with aggravated domestic violence with a firearm, kidnapping, burglary with battery, aggravated domestic violence by strangulation, and felon in possession of a firearm.

He also is wanted on similar charges in Manatee County, police said.

History of violence between couple

McAllister’s godmother, Denise Couran, lives on the same block and was awoken by her daughter early Tuesday morning. Bradenton police had the home where McAllister’s girlfriend lives surrounded.

Officers had their rifles drawn and pointed at the home, she said. Everyone on the block was asked to stay inside their homes and away from the windows.

She watched as McAllister’s young son walked out the house to the waiting SWAT team. Eventually, she watched her godson walk out too and get arrested.

“My dream came true,” Couran said recalling a premonition she dreamed just a few nights before.

McAllister often visited after he got into an argument with his girlfriend, she said. On Monday night, when she heard his voice, she came out to talk to him and shared a dream she had in which police had blocked off the road and there were blue police lights.

“Stay away from her,” Couran said she told him.

“I don’t say too much. I sit on the porch and see a lot of stuff,” Couran said.

Previous domestic charges

This is not the first time police have been called out during a dispute between the couple.

Last June, police were called to another domestic disturbance between McAllister and the same victim, who was pregnant at the time.

According to court records, police were called to Citrus Meadows apartments after someone reported McAllister attempting to run over the woman with a car in the parking lot.

McAllister and the woman had gotten into a fight while inside the apartment, where he slammed her on the ground and hit her in the face multiple times, the police report said. The fight then spilled into the parking lot.

The argument started with McAllister wanting to know who the woman was texting after the two had left Paddy Wagon, a bar in downtown Bradenton.

Witnesses said they saw him dragging the woman down the stairs while kicking her repeatedly in the stomach. The report said McAllister knew at the time she was pregnant.

Once in the parking lot, McAllister got into the woman’s vehicle and reversed the car out of the lot; he then accelerated the car forward, striking her with the front of the vehicle.

The woman was knocked down onto her back.

The report said McAllister got out of the vehicle and continued to punch and kick the woman. Police noticed bruises on the woman’s eyes and lips, and bite marks on her shoulder blades.

McAllister left the scene and was later charged with aggravated battery of a pregnant person.
