Writing ‘Call 911’ on his check saved him from Bradenton kidnappers, cops say

The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office has one man in custody and is developing other suspects in a kidnapping and robbery scheme.

Deputies say Adrian Maloney, 28, and the other suspect kidnapped the victim from the Days Inn at 3506 First St. Monday morning, beat the victim and tried to get him to cash a $2,600 check at a bank on Cortez Road.

According to the arrest report, the victim had been partying at the hotel the previous night and on Monday morning, Maloney and and another man burst into his room, beat him and threatened to kill him if he didn’t do what they said.

Maloney and the other suspect drove the victim to the bank and Maloney accompanied the victim inside, reminding him what would happen if he tried anything.

The victim wrote “Call 911” on the check, alerting the teller to a problem. The teller notified law enforcement.

Deputies made contact with Maloney, but the other suspect drove off when law enforcement arrived.

After being taken into custody, deputies found several drugs on Maloney, including methamphetamine and cocaine.

Maloney was booked into the Manatee County jail Aug. 24 and charged with robbery, kidnapping, battery and three counts of drug possession. He remains in custody on bonds totaling $30,000.
