Armed carjackers struck with children inside, cops say. Bradenton 18-year-old in custody

A Bradenton 18-year-old who was 17 at the time of an armed carjacking is being charged as an adult and faces life in prison if convicted on the first-degree felony.

Alfonso Aguilar was already in custody and awaiting trial on charges he compiled in May for motor vehicle theft, fleeing to elude, resisting arrest and leaving the scene of a crash with property damage.

Deputies say the armed carjacking happened in early February. Aguilar and two yet-to-be identified suspects were waiting when the male and female victims, along with their young children, arrived home, according to the arrest warrant.

The men pulled a gun on the couple and demanded their vehicle. The male victim pleaded for the safety of his family and they were able to get his children out before Aguilar and the other two suspects left in the vehicle, according to the report.

Deputies say the three men took the vehicle for a joyride and eventually abandoned it. According to the report, Aguilar left behind a glove, which was swabbed for DNA and submitted to the state for testing in February. The results came back July 20 and an arrest warrant was issued.

Aguilar was officially charged with armed carjacking on Thursday.

A search for the remaining two suspects continues, but according to the report, investigators have the DNA of at least one of the remaining two suspects.

Aguilar remains in custody on his previous charges and is being held without bond on the current charge.
