Bradenton man sentenced to 22 years in prison for death of infant in Sarasota
A Bradenton man found guilty of manslaughter in the 2017 death of an infant child was sentenced on Monday to 22 years in prison with credit for time served.
Uvo-Kk Ayoma Uvo, 28, will also be required to serve five years of probation upon release, a judge on the 12th Judicial Circuit Court ruled.
In December 2017, Uvo had his girlfriend’s three-month-old boy in his care while the child’s mother was at a nail salon in Sarasota, according to the Sarasota Police Department. When Uvo returned to the salon to pick up the child’s mother, she found her son “lifeless” and “slightly cold to the touch.”
Police say that Uvo was wanted for several outstanding warrants out of Lee County at the time, and when the child’s mother called 911 for help, he left the scene.
The child was transported via helicopter to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital and later died. Doctors told investigators that they found unnatural brain swelling that indicated possible abuse.
Uvo was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse and child neglect. The charges were upgraded to aggravated manslaughter after a medical examiner’s report revealed that the child suffered from a traumatic brain injury and ruled the death a homicide.
Uvo is being held at the Sarasota County jail. His criminal record includes a past conviction for marijuana possession as well as charges of grand theft and possession of marijuana with intent to sell for which he accepted plea deals. An arrest warrant was issued for Uvo out of Manatee County in 2018 for a charge of sale or delivery of fentanyl. That case, which includes other drug-related charges, is still listed as open.
