He was hired to protect Longboat Key condo units. He was robbing them instead, cops say

A 23-year-old security guard working for the Positano Condo Association on Longboat Key is charged with burglarizing at least one of the units he was hired to protect.

According to the arrest report, Jared Wright was working on April 17 when he illegally entered the victim’s unoccupied condo.

The victim , who was out of town, called security when he received an electronic alert from his surveillance system that someone was inside his residence.

The victim called the condo security company and it was Wright who picked up the phone.

According to Longboat Key police officers, Wright was captured on video changing out of his security uniform when he made entry into the victim’s unit to burglarize it.

When the victim called Wright to check on his condo, Wright also is seen on video changing back into his security guard uniform. He then is seen again in uniform reentering the victim’s residence at the victim’s request to check on his unit, police say.

Wright told the victim, who still did not realize it was Wright that he had seen on video in his residence earlier, that everything was OK, according to the report.

Police got involved and after reviewing the surveillance videos, took Wright into custody.

According to the report, Wright told police he wasn’t stealing anything, rather he just wanted, “to see how the other half lives.”

Police say Wright admitted to changing his clothes so he would not be recognized and was aware the condo’s owner was out of town.

Wright told police that he, “walked cautiously heel to toe in case there was somebody in the condo below,” the victim’s condo.

Wright was booked into the Manatee County jail on April 17 and charged with felony burglary. He posted a $7,500 bond and was released the following the day pending a future court date.

Wright entered a plea of not guilty on Thursday.
