Bradenton man kidnapped and tried to rape woman, cops say. She made a daring escape
A 34-year-old Bradenton man is being charged with sexual battery and kidnapping, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say Clayton Rhodes, forced a woman into his vehicle in the 6900 block of Georgia Avenue as she was walking to a nearby 7-Eleven.
According to the police report, Rhodes brandished “what appeared to be a firearm,” forced her into his vehicle and drove to the Bayshore Gardens Recreational Center at about 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
Rhodes lists himself as an employee of Sarasota County. Drew Winchester, media relations for Sarasota County confirmed Rhodes’ employment, but, “Beyond that, we don’t comment on employee matters,” when asked what role he has with the county.
Deputies say Rhodes forced the victim from his vehicle, placing a knife to her throat and began forcing her to walk toward the pier.
According to the report, Rhodes told the victim he had every intention of raping her. Deputies say he ordered the victim to undress and as she began to comply, Rhodes lowered the knife and began to remove some of his clothing.
Deputies say that’s when the victim took advantage of the opportunity. She jumped into the canal and swam to the 2300 block of Pennsylvania Avenue where she was able to get the attention of a mobile home park resident who called 911.
Deputies began to canvas the area looking for a suspect who matched the description and made a traffic stop on Rhodes.
According to the report, Rhodes was “sweating profusely and acting suspiciously nervous.”
Deputies did not find a gun, but did locate a knife matching the victim’s description.
Deputies say Rhodes, “omitted information and was inconsistent with statements made prior to patrol deputies.”
Rhodes was booked into the Manatee County jail on charges of sexual battery, false imprisonment and aggravated battery with intent to commit a felony.
He is being held without bond.
