Bradenton man stabbed girlfriend to death in 1984. He’s back in jail on a gun charge
A 71-year-old Bradenton man convicted of second-degree murder in Sarasota in 1984 for the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend is back behind bars after arming himself with a loaded pistol, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
The 1984 case against Grady Marshall, aka Elmer Marshall, made headlines as his lawyer put on a temporary insanity defense, claiming the Vietnam war veteran was having a post traumatic stress disorder episode when he killed 38-year-old Jean McCall.
The defense presented two psychiatrists who testified Marshall believed he was stabbing the enemy during the episode. However, the prosecution’s psychiatrist testified that Marshall had a passive-aggressive personality and “was an ideal candidate to murder someone,” and knew what he was doing.
The jury found Marshall guilty of second-degree murder.
Marshall went to prison and was released in 2011, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.
Sunday evening, deputies were looking for a wanted burglary suspect in the 1500 block of 60th Avenue Drive East when they saw Marshall getting out of his vehicle with what turned out to be a loaded pistol in one hand and a box of ammunition in the other, according to the arrest report.
Marshall was taken into custody and booked into the Manatee County jail on a felony charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and a felony charge of possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. He remains in custody on bonds totaling $15,000.
