Palmetto men were fighting over a woman, cops say. One got shot, the other is in jail

An argument over a woman turned into a shooting in Palmetto, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Jimmy Lee McNear has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and being in a felon in possession of a firearm for the shooting, which happened Saturday in the 2400 block of Fifth Avenue East.

McNear, 43, was booked into the Manatee County jail on Sunday and is being held without bond.

Deputies responded to the area Saturday night where they made contact with the victim, who had been shot in the left arm.

According to an arrest warrant, the victim and McNear “were involved in a heated verbal altercation over a female,” which escalated into a physical fight.

Deputies say the fight ran its course and the two stopped struggling with one another.

However, the victim soon saw one of McNear’s relatives show up and became suspicious so he went inside for awhile to let everything calm down, according to deputies.

The warrant states the victim eventually came outside and saw McNear standing at the end of his driveway with a black rifle. Deputies say McNear shouted out something, raised the rifle and fired one shot, which struck the victim in the arm as he tried to duck out of the way.

The victim retreated back into his home and called law enforcement.

The warrant states McNear shot the victim in “evident retaliation for the previous physical altercation.”
