An inmate in custody at the Manatee County Jail was charged with introducing drugs into the facility after deputies found a bag of pills under a mattress.

According to a police report, Maya Rembo, 45, turned herself in on June 14 to serve a six-month sentence on a child neglect charge.

That was when two inmates told a deputy on duty that they saw Rembo with what they thought was a bag of pills.

A search of Rembo's cell revealed 79.5 pills in a bag under her mattress, 18 of which were identified as Alprazolam, a Schedule 4 controlled substance. There were also 23 setraline, 21 topiramate, six melatonin and six ibuprofen, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The affidavit says Rembo made a full confession on tape as to why she brought the drugs into the facility. She said she felt like she needed to bring a two-week supply of medication "to help her get through" her six-month sentence.

When asked how she brought the drugs into the facility, she told deputies she put the bag inside a body cavity.

Jail records indicate that Rembo has a slew of charges in Manatee County dating to 1994, including prostitution, DUI and probation violation.

She remains in custody at the Manatee County Jail without bond.
