A man who was killed last week was hanging out with the man who shot him just hours before his death, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office

Jesse D. Cairo Jr., 22, was found shot in the chest with his own gun and laying in the driveway of his Largo home around 4 a.m. Friday morning. Cairo was transported to Largo Medical Center where he later died, detectives said.

Cairo was known to sell marijuana and also kept a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson semiautomatic handgun, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualitieri said at a news conference on Monday. Washington was also known to sell the drug.

The sheriff’s office later identified 22-year-old Dale Eugene Washington II as the shooter and arrested him early Sunday morning after he was found hiding out in a house in Orlando.

Investigators say the Thursday night started when Cairo and Washington went to Oz Ladies & Gentlemen’s Nightclub on U.S.-19 in Clearwater. The pair spent most of the night and early Friday morning together at the club, and while there met two women, detectives said.

The group later left Oz around 2 a.m. in Washington’s car to go to another club. After leaving that club, deputies say Cairo, Washington and the two women went to Cairo’s home.

While at the home, some type of argument broke out and the women left. Another argument then escalated between the two men and Cairo pulled out his handgun. But detectives say Washington managed to wrestle the gun away from Cairo and shot him.

According to deputies, Washington’s car was spotted speeding away from Cairo’s home moments after the shots were fired. Detectives say they began searching for Washington and eventually found him at a home in Orlando. In a search of the home, investigators said they discovered a “significant amount” of marijuana and the gun that belonged to Cairo.

Washington was booked into the Orange County Jail and will be brought back to Pinellas County Jail to face a second-degree murder charge, detectives said.

The sheriff’s office said Washington has six prior felony arrests and nine prior misdemeanor arrests.

Detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify the two women who were with the men prior to the shooting.
