High school student in police custody after reports of gun at school

A 17-year-old high school student is facing felony weapons charges and police are looking for another suspect after officials received reports of a gun on campus.

St. Petersburg police were called to Lakewood High School around 9:37 a.m. Monday when several students told the school resource officer of a video showing a teen on campus with a gun, according to police.

The video was posted to the social media application Snapchat., police said. The video, posted by WFLA News Channel 8, shows someone holding a small handgun and pointing it at the camera. Lockers can be seen in the background.

The school was placed on lockdown and police started an investigation, according to police. The lockdown has since been lifted.

Officers moved the search off-campus when they learned a group of students left the school. During the off-campus search, police found a gun in a backpack, according to a news release. WFLA reported the backpack was found in a dumpster Monday morning.

A 17-year-old Lakewood High School student was taken into custody and faces felony weapons charges, according to police.

Officials are also searching for a second person believed to be involved and other charges may be pending, according to police.
