The principal of Coleman Middle School in Hillsborough County and his wife face child abuse charges after being arrested in Tampa on Monday.

Michael Hoskinson and his wife, Kimberly, who is a teacher at Plant High School, are accused of physically abusing a child. Detectives say they learned about a Nov. 2 incident unrelated to their employment with Hillsborough County Schools and immediately began an investigation that resulted in a same-day arrest.

According to a release, Kimberly, 49, pushed the victim to the ground after a verbal altercation. Michael, 53, then punched the victim twice in the ribs. The child was left with bruised ribs and an injured wrist, authorities say.

Both suspects denied causing the victim any harm.

Bay News 9 reports the school district sent out an automated phone message to Coleman Middle families and staff.

“Our No. 1 priority is the safety and well-being of our students, and we will ensure they have all of the resources they need to get through this difficult time,” the message said.

The Hoskinsons were booked into Orient Road Jail, but were released Tuesday after posting bond.
