Man found guilty of burglary, battery
A jury found a 32-year-old man guilty of burglary and battery of a person older than 65.
Stephen Weidman could face life in prison, according to State Attorney Ed Brodsky.
According to court documents, on Jan. 24 2016, Stephen Weidman kicked down the back door of the residence, forced the victims into a bedroom and demanded money from them. Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to their 911 call and used a K9 unit to locate evidence used to charge Weidman.
A ski mask, discarded clothing and a purse stolen from the victim were found and used to identify Weidman through DNA analysis. Other pieces of evidence presented during trial, Oct. 25-27, included witness testimony, recorded interviews with Weidman and photographs.
The jury deliberated for a little more than an hour.
“This conviction is a result of a swift response and through investigation by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. We will be seeking a lengthy prison sentence for the Defendant’s criminal conduct,” said Assistant State Attorney William Greiner, who prosecuted the case along with Daniel Ley, in a news release.
Weidman has previously been convicted of numerous felonies, including home invasion and drug possession.
