Officers on restricted duty as investigation into fatal shooting continues
The investigation into the fatal shooting of a man involving two Palmetto police officers remains ongoing while the officers involved remain on restricted duty, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Anthony Robinson, 32, died last month after being wounded during an exchange of gunfire with Palmetto police officers Angel Uruchima and Madison Peters. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement took over the investigation, a standard arrangement in police-involved shootings with many agencies, including the Palmetto Police Department.
As of Friday, the investigation into the shooting remains active, according to FDLE spokeswoman Jessica Cary.
Meanwhile, Uruchima and Peters have not returned to full duty, according to Palmetto Chief of Police Scott Tyler. Both officers have been assigned administrative duties at the police department headquarters.
“Until we receive the results from FDLE and they are reviewed by the State Attorney’s Office, they will not return to full duty,” Tyler said.
Intially after the shooting, Uruchima, a five-year veteran, and Peters, a five-month veteran, were placed on paid administrative leave.
In the early morning hours of Sept. 25, Palmetto police were called out to the 1800 block of Fifth Avenue West after Robinson’s father called 911 to report that his son had fired multiple shots outside the family’s home.
Robinson was spotted leaving the area by officers who were heading to the home within moments of the call. He failed to stop when officers attempted to pull him over, and a pursuit ensued. But when Robinson lost control of his vehicle, he crashed at the intersection of Bayshore Road and Eighth Avenue West and ran into the Memphis Cemetery.
Inside the cemetery, Robinson exchanged gunfire with Uruchima and Peters, and was wounded. Robinson was taken to Blake Medical Center where he later died.
Robinson had a criminal history that included convictions for sale of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance and felony battery.
