16-year-old found dead after overnight standoff with police

A 16-year-old boy involved in a standoff with police was found dead Thursday morning from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot would, police said.

West Melbourne Police were called to a home in the 5100 block of Martin Lane at 11:57 p.m. Wednesday after the caller said her 16-year-old grandson was throwing things inside the house, according to police.

Officers responding to the call went inside to speak to the residents and family members when the boy came out of a bedroom and started firing at officers, according to police. Police said the officers were not able to return fire.

Three people and the officers were able to get out unharmed, but two others were still inside with the shooter, according to police.

One person still inside the home was able to escape and police were able to remove the other in the early morning hours, according to tweets from the department.

Shortly after 6:30 a.m. Thursday, police announced the suspected shooter was found dead inside the home from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gun shot.

The boy was known to police, but has not yet been named, according to tweets from the department.

The street was closed for hours and a few homes close to the incident were evacuated, police said. Residents were told they could return to their homes around 6:45 a.m.
