Two report dog bites after pack of dogs runs loose
Two people suffered dog bites, one severe, after five dogs running loose attacked them, St. Petersburg police told Bradenton Herald media partner Bay News 9.
Officers were called to the 2000 block of 21st Street South Monday after the dogs were reported loose, according to Bay News 9.
Two neighbors were attacked. Laquanda Butler, 52, suffered a bite on the leg. She told Bay News 9 she was trying help another neighbor, 62-year-old Ronald Macon, get away from the pack of pit bulls.
Macon suffered severe injuries that required emergency surgery, according to Bay News 9. Macon’s brother told the news station he hit the attacking dog with a chair to try to stop the attack.
Officers noticed the dogs were getting out through open windows in a home that didn’t have screens, Bay News 9 reported. They used a fire extinguisher in efforts to keep the dogs at bay when they charged at the officers and a Pinellas Animal Control officer.
The dogs eventually re-entered the home through the open windows, and officials were able to trap them all inside.
The owner of the dogs was not home when the incident occurred and has not been charged, as police said there was no intent, according to Bay News 9. The owner helped load the dogs into the Animal Control officer’s vehicle.
The dogs will be kept under quarantine for further investigation, according to Bay News 9.
