Man charged with rape after woman records attack, cops say

A 53-year-old Bradenton man was arrested Tuesday on several charges, including raping his 26-year-old tenant, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

On Saturday, the victim returned around noon to a house on 57th Avenue Drive East. She had been renting from Richard Botek, the sheriff’s office said.

As she looked in her bedroom mirror putting up her hair, Botek barged into her room, picked her up by the knees and carried her to his bed, according to the probable cause affidavit. She told him to stop as attempted to unbutton her pants and touched her over her clothes, the affidavit read. When the woman was released, Botek laughed, according to the sheriff’s office.

Eleven hours later that same day, Botek again barged into the woman’s room as she was laying on her bed and again carried her to his room, according to the affidavit. This time, the sheriff’s office said, the woman recorded the encounter on her phone, as he sexually battered her. After some time, Botek released her and she locked herself in the bathroom to shower, according to the affidavit.

The woman returned home late Monday and Botek threw a plate at her, according to the affidavit. When she asked why he was mad, he slapped her, the affidavit said. She then called 911.

During a recorded interview between a detective and the victim, Botek called her and admitted to hitting her, but was “combative and verbally hostile” when she brought up the sexual battery and did not discuss it, the affidavit said. As the victim gave her sworn statement, Botek called the victim several times telling her to come back to the house and that he had flattened her tires, according to the affidavit.

Botek faces charges including sexual battery, false imprisonment and simple battery. He is being held at the Manatee County jail without bond.
