Man overdoses on heroin after taking child to play soccer in park, cops say
A 29-year-old man was arrested on a child neglect charge Sunday after overdosing in a bathroom at a park, according to the Bradenton Police Department.
Steven Renner took a boy he was watching to G.T. Bray Park to play soccer around 2:45 p.m., according to the probable cause affidavit. The boy, who was not identified, told police Renner met with an unknown man to be paid for work he had done last week. Renner then said his stomach hurt and went to the bathroom, leaving the boy outside unsupervised.
A few minutes later, another unknown man went into the bathroom and told the boy not to go inside. Renner had overdosed.
When first responders arrived, they found Renner passed out with a small baggie, a spoon and a needle. He was revived with one milligram of Narcan, the brand name of the overdose antidote called naloxone. According to the affidavit, Renner admitted to police he took heroin and that “he has a problem.”
Renner faces one charge of child neglect without great bodily harm and is being held at the Manatee County jail without bond.
