Police say suspect fired shots day after bad breakup

A 33-year-old Bradenton woman has been identified as the suspect in a shooting Thursday afternoon that wounded a man.

According to a Bradenton Police Department arrest report, Erika Edwards was taken into custody an hour after officers responded to the 600 block of 10th Avenue East.

Edwards and her live-in girlfriend fought Wednesday night, and the girlfriend broke it off after two years, according to the probable cause affidavit. The next afternoon, detectives say the girlfriend was driven to their shared home on 10th Avenue East by a man.

Detectives say that Edwards was standing in the driveway as the girlfriend walked toward the house. According to the affidavit, as the man started to drive away, Edwards “purposely fired at least two rounds” from a gun at the man’s car.

One round went through the car and out of the windshield. The second hit the man in the back of the head, according to detectives.

At the scene, detectives found at least two rounds: one spent, one unspent.

The man drove himself to Manatee Memorial Hospital and was said to be in stable condition, according to the affidavit. Witnesses told detectives Edwards walked back inside the house.

During an interview at the Bradenton Police Department, Edwards told detectives after being read her Miranda rights that she didn’t think the domestic dispute Wednesday night was serious and denied seeing her girlfriend or the man Thursday. She also said she did not fire a gun and didn’t know Bradenton police officers were at her house until her brother opened the door.

Edwards remains in custody at the Manatee County jail without bond on charges of attempted murder and probation violation.
