Sarasota woman found guilty of attempting to drown and stab her 6-year-old daughter
A Sarasota woman was found guilty Friday afternoon of stabbing and attempting to drown her 6-year-old daughter in June 2015.
Ashley Parker, 31, was found guilty on four felony counts: attempted first-degree murder with a deadly weapon; two counts of aggravated child abuse; and resisting an officer with violence in connection to the incident, according to the Sarasota Police Department.
On June 26, 2015, Sarasota police responded to the 2100 block of Leon Avenue to assist emergency medical technicians who were treating a 6-year-old child who had been held underwater and stabbed. The child was Parker’s daughter, police said.
The child was taken to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg and later recovered from her injuries.
Parker was charged with attempted murder after police said she stabbed her daughter in the stomach and leg about 12:30 p.m. that Friday. Officers said Parker’s parents called 911 after finding their wounded granddaughter wrapped in a pink blanket and lying on the floor in the residence hallway.
The grandfather said the family went to breakfast at McDonald’s at 8 a.m. that day and he and the girl’s grandmother brought Parker and her daughter home. After a few errands, the grandfather said he returned to the home and found the door locked, according to the report.
When he saw the girl and called 911, Parker reportedly grabbed a knife and began waving it around.
When Parker’s parents got into the car to follow the paramedics, Parker jumped into the backseat with a knife, but the vehicle was stopped by police.
Parker is scheduled to be sentenced at 9 a.m. Nov. 2.
Sarasota police Capt. Corinne Stannish of the agency’s Criminal Investigations Division said in a statement that the outcome on the case “is a result the hard work and dedication by lead Detective Maria Llovio, patrol officers Ken Goebel and Steve Mayforth and our entire Criminal Investigations Team including our Criminalistics Unit.”
“This case also had the outcome it did thanks to our partnership with the State Attorney’s Office and Prosecutors Andrea McHugh and Karen Fraivillig,” Stannish said.
