Manatee County residents to pay more for trash pickup
MANATEE -- Manatee County residents will pay 72 cents more a month for trash pickup beginning Nov. 1.
At Tuesday's meeting, the Manatee County Commission approved the rate increase.
Single family residential with yard waste and recycling will increase by 72 cents, or 5.29 percent, to $14.33 a month. Multifamily residential will increase 56 cents a month, or 5.29 percent, to $11.18.
The increases are the first for the county since November 2011.
"Every month we wait to impose it, it will affect that rate model," Mike Gore, county utilities department director, said at a commission work session in August.
In Sarasota County, the collection services fee is $13.29 per month. In Hillsborough County, the rate is $18.56 per month.
Manatee County has contracts with Waste Management and Waste Pro.
The commission also approved increasing the tipping fee, which is charged when someone brings waste to the landfill, $4 more per ton. The county tipping fee, which hasn't been increased since October 2007, is $36 per ton and will now be $40 per ton.
In Sarasota County, the tipping fee is $57.56 per ton. In Hillsborough County, the fee is $68.16 per ton.
"We are on the low end even where we are today," County Administrator Ed Hunzeker said at the August work session.
The rate increases are in response to changes in the Consumer Price Index, which includes the amount paid to the haulers.
