Sarasota DUI campaign to run through Sept. 5

The Sarasota Police Department will team up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for a DUI campaign from now until Sept. 5, according to a press release.

The program will run through the Labor Day weekend to keep roadways safe.

According to the release, 40 percent of fatailies in traffic crashes involved drunk drivers during the 2014 Labor Day weekend. More than 10,000 people died each year from 2010 to 2014, according to a NHTSA statistic.

“Drunk driving is not a victimless crime and our officers will be on the lookout for drunk drivers,” said Sarasota Capt. Kevin Stiff in the release.

The police department advised drivers to plan ahead and designate a sobor driver, or to call a taxi, Uber or a sober friend. In Florida, Tow-To-Go, a program sponsored by AAA and Budweiser, is offered from Sept. 2 to 6 a.m. Sept. 6 by calling 1-800-286-9246 (1-800-2-TOW-2-GO).
