Helping corral wild driver earns Manatee deputy top June honor

Michael Mahoney was named Deputy of the Month for June by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Department.

Mahoney was out with his family and stopped at a red light Feb. 26 when he noticed a car driving erratically toward him in his lane. Mahoney was able to move his vehicle out of the path of the oncoming vehicle, which traveled for approximately two blocks in the median taking out plants, reflectors and other items.

Mahoney found the vehicle hit a pole a short distance away and flagged down a Bradenton police officer. During the investigation, the driver attacked an officer and Mahoney helped take the combative suspect to the ground. Even after being his with a Taser it took awhile before the suspect could be handcuffed.

Bradenton Police Command Staff called to say Mahoney’s actions were heroic.
