Blood donors in Manatee asked to make appointments

Blood donation centers expect to be busy Monday to help the need in Orlando after the nation’s worst mass shooting on Sunday morning.

Those interested in donating should make an appointment. The OneBlood website shows real-time appointment availabilities. Donating blood takes about 30 minutes and donating platelets takes about 2 hours. Type O negative blood is the universal donor.

Monday, there are Bloodmobiles accepting donations from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Parrish Branch YMCA, 12214 U.S. 301 N., and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Parrish Publix, 9005 U.S. 301 N.

The SunCoast Blood Bank website shows an urgent need in all blood types. Mobile blood donation centers are scheduled in various Manatee-Sarasota locations in the coming weeks.

Donations can be scheduled by phone by calling OneBlood at 1-888-936-6283 or SunCoast Blood Bank at 1-866-972-5663.
