Memorial Day observances planned in Manatee-Sarasota:

  • Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota, Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 28. Retired Brig. Gen. Gerald McIlmoyle will be guest speaker. Musical salute by the Trinity Fellowship Choir and the Sarasota Military Academy Bagpipes. Free parking. Flags for Fallen Vets will place an American flag on every grave site prior to the service.
  • SRQ Vets inaugural 5K Memorial March at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 28, to honor those who have fallen while serving the nation and community. Starts at Hooters restaurant, 6507 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Information: 941-735-7983.
  • The Manasota Memorial Park,1221 53rd Ave. E., Bradenton, annual Memorial Day weekend service. The memorial will start at 9 a.m. Saturday in Manasota Memorial’s Garden of Valor and the guest speaker will be past Commander of the State Disabled American Veterans Edward Barnshaw.
  • The Tribute to Heroes Memorial Day Parade and block party at Lakewood Ranch. Pre-block party on Ranch Main Street starts at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 29, followed by parade at 7 p.m. Street party follows the parade. Local bands and choir groups, drum lines and dance teams, floats, decorated bike and wagon contest, food and drink, children’s zone and live entertainment. Dogs on leash welcome.   • The 10th annual Jacobite/First Brass Memorial Day Tribute with vocalist Sharon Scott, the Kiltie Highland Dancers, 16 brass musicians and bagpipes at 3 p.m. May 29 at St. James United Methodist Church. 2049 Honore Ave. Call for tickets at 941-928-0296 or go to TheFirstBrass.org. Tickets also available at Scots Corner, 3452 17th St., Sarasota and at the church office.
  • Bradenton Memorial Day service 9 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Veterans Park behind Manatee Memorial Hospital, 206 Second St. E., Bradenton. Guest speaker will be retired Brig. Gen. Jerry Neff.
  • The annual Sarasota Memorial Day Parade starts at 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Main Street and Osprey Avenue. The route will be west along Main Street to Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park on Gulfstream Avenue. Ceremony follows at Hamel Park.
