Hurricane Center: 90 percent chance tropical storm develops by weekend

There is a 90 percent chance a low pressure area centered between Bermuda and the Bahamas will develop into a tropical cyclone by later Friday or Saturday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

At 7:45 a.m. EDT Thursday, the Hurricane Center said related shower activity “continues to show signs of organization, and the circulation of the low has become a little better defined overnight.”

Environmental conditions “are generally conducive for a tropical or subtropical cyclone to form later today or Saturday while this system moves west-northwestward to northwestward toward the southeastern United States coast,” the Hurricane Center said.

The Hurricane Center said there is a 90 percent chance of formation within the next 48 hours and 90 percent chance within the next five days.

Forecasters advised interests from Georgia through North Carolina should monitor the system’s progress.

An U.S. Air Force reconnaissance plane will be sent to investigate the disturbance area on Friday afternoon, according to the Hurricane Center.
