Focus on Manatee: Join Leadership Manatee for 'behind-the-scenes' view

Throughout my career at the Manatee Chamber, I have been fortunate to work with so many men and women who exemplify my definition of leadership.

They've been able to set a vision, gather intelligence about issues, coordinate resources, and measure progress. They give this leadership day in and day out to businesses that drive our local economy. What they've also done is give this kind of committed leadership to local non-profits, which is critical in meeting community needs.

One way business leaders can gain knowledge about our community that can enhance their leadership skills is through the Leadership Manatee program. More than 30 years ago, the Manatee Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Bradenton Kiwanis Club, developed the program as a way to ensure that Manatee County always had a pool of leaders equipped with broad knowledge about the opportunities and challenges facing our community.

The program also provides a "behind-the-scenes" view of the cohesive role each organization and municipality plays in the growth and success of Manatee County.

As of March, nearly 1,200 local business and community leaders have completed the program, and you won't find a graduate who won't say it's one of the best things they have done in Manatee County. The graduates of the program develop strong connections with one another -- relationships based upon a common desire to make Manatee County the best place to live, work and play. And, while each year's class members have significant leadership experience going into the program, all find new inspiration for service to the community. Past graduates lead many of our area's non-profits, hold public office and run businesses critical to our economy and job base.

The program, which utilizes a competitive selection process, is led by a board of past graduates, Manatee Chamber members and Bradenton Kiwanis members. These board members are assisted by other past graduates in developing each day's agenda. There are 13 program days built around a curriculum that intentionally exposes class members to a diverse set of community sectors, issues and challenges. For example, there are days individually focused on agriculture, education, healthcare, transportation, local government,

human needs and more.

Applications for the 2016-17 Leadership Manatee program are due May 27 and are available on the Manatee Chamber's website at ManateeChamber.com. You will also find more information about the program's criteria and application process on the website. Because of the strong interest of a large applicant pool each year and a desire for class diversity, it is common for class members to apply more than once.

The Leadership Manatee program was created to develop knowledge, inspire service and strengthen leadership of Manatee County citizens. The input and dedication of Leadership Manatee graduates help drive the success and growth of our community. Apply for Leadership Manatee and help make a difference in Manatee County.
