Lane closures part of I- 75/University Parkway work
UNIVERSITY PARK -- Lane closures are planned for Interstate 75 southbound at the University Parkway interchange this week.
As part of the construction on the diverging diamond interchange, there will be temporary single and double-lane closures on I-75 southbound at University Parkway beginning at 8 p.m. Monday until 7 a.m. Tuesday. Double lane closures begin at 10 p.m.
For the remainder of the week, there will be temporary intermittent single lane closures on the I-75 southbound off-ramp at University Parkway. These closures, which will last through Thursday night, will be between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.
The lane closures are part of the diverging diamond interchange construction, which is expected to be completed in fall 2017.
School District names new district personnel director
BRADENTON -- Wendy Mungillo has been named the new Manatee County School District personnel director, according to a news release.
The Ballard Elementary School principal replaces Carl Auckerman, who was named principal at Palmetto High School.
The naming, which has to be approved by the school board, is one of a number of recent senior administrative and principal hires recently announced by the district.
Once approved, the changes will become effective July 1.
Mungillo has been with the district since 1993, serving as the Ballard Elementary principal for the last three years, according to the release.
Judicial commission sets special meeting May 4
MANATEE -- The 12th Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission issued a notice Monday evening that there will be a special meeting via conference call at 4:30 p.m. May 4. E-mail Jenny Davis at jdavis@blalockwalters.com for call-in information.
During the meeting there will be discussion of the action items regarding the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Scott M. Brownell:
Establish a timeframe for selection to fill the vacancy;

The Insane Inflatable 5K coming to Lakewood Ranch
LAKEWOOD RANCH -- The Insane Inflatable 5K is coming to Premier Sports Campus, 5895 Post Blvd., Lakewood Ranch, on May 21.
The Insane Inflatable 5K is described as having the world's largest and most extreme inflatable obstacles.
Participants hit the first obstacle at the starting line, climbing up the front side, and sliding down the back.
A variety of obstacles follow, including the Crash Course, the Slingshot, the Wave Runner, the Jump Around, and more.
Participants are assigned to waves, which leave at 15-minute intervals, starting at 8:30 a.m., finishing with the last wave at 11 a.m.
The American Cancer Society is partnering with Insane Inflatable 5K to benefit the Relay for Life. A portion of the proceeds from each Insane Inflatable 5K will support the local Relay For Life event in each community in which an Insane Inflatable 5K event is held.

Safe boating class announced for teens
BRADENTON -- The Anna Maria Island Sail and Power Squadron is offering a special basic boating safety course for teenagers in five sessions, June 20-24, from 9 a.m. to noon. All classes will be held at the squadron's building, 1200 71st St. N.W., Bradenton. Parents and family members are welcome to attend.
Completion of the course and a successful written exam certifies the student to receive their state boating ID. The exam will be given and scored on the last Friday. One adult is requested to attend with the student on Friday from 11:45 a.m. to noon to process state safe boating ID paperwork.
A limited number of full and partial scholarships will be provided to local teens to take the course.
Class size is limited and pre-registration is required. If there is enough demand, additional classes may be added. Tribute to Heroes event announced for May 29
LAKEWOOD RANCH -- The Tribute to Heroes Memorial Day Parade and block party is set for Sunday, May 29. The pre-block party at Lakewood Ranch Main Street starts at 5 p.m., followed by the parade at 7 p.m. A street party follows the parade.
Planned: local bands and choir groups, drum lines and dance teams, floats, kids decorated bike and wagon contest, food and drink, kids zone, and live entertainment. Dogs on a leash are welcome.
