Man dies in crash in Venice

SARASOTA -- A 68-year-old Massachusetts man was skilled when he drove off a highway in Venice and crashed into a tree, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

About 11:47 p.m. Sunday, Anthony F. Benevento of Swampscott, Mass., was westbound on State Road 681, approaching U.S. 41, when he failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the roadway, striking a tree, according to a news release.

After the collision, Benevento's 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 overturned, and Benevento was thrown from the vehicle, FHP said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
