Turning Points' walk event to aid Manatee County's homeless population

Fundraising walk to help homeless in Manatee

BRADENTON BEACH -- Turning Points' fourth-annual "Walk a Mile in Their Shoes" will begin with registration at 4 p.m., followed by the walk at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at South Coquina Beach.

All of the proceeds of this event go directly to fund programs benefiting homeless children and their families.

Planned: a one-mile walk on the beach along with a sand blast/castle competition, rock climbing wall, drawings and raffles, T-shirts for pre-registered walkers, family pictures, face painting, kids activities, food, Zumba, a DJ and the post walk party and sunset watch.

Registration is free for kids under 5, $10 for students and children, $20 for adults, and $45 for families. Pre-register at turningpointswalk.org.

Great American Cleanup set for Saturday

MANATEE -- The 2016 Great American Cleanup in Manatee County is set for 9 a.m. -- noon Saturday. In Manatee County last year, 2,230 Keep Manatee Beautiful volunteers collected 19,817 pounds of trash and 5,023 pounds of recyclables; cleaned 307 miles of roads and highways, and 218 miles of shoreline.

A list of cleanup sites is at manateebeautiful.com. Bring gloves, sunscreen and wear closed toe shoes. The trash bags, drinks and thank-you gifts will be provided.
