Mount Gilead SDA to celebrate new wing opening

BRADENTON -- On April 17, Mount Gilead Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1803 13th St. W., Bradenton, will open its new Community Services Department, where it will give food boxes to the community every third Sunday.

During the opening, Mount Gilead SDA will also have health checks for community members, fun for children and hot dogs and other food along with regular food boxes.

USFSM professors to study Sarasota policing effort

SARASOTA -- Sarasota police have asked two criminologists from USF Sarasota-Manatee to evaluate the city's three-year crackdown on drug dealers.

Fawn Ngo and Jessica Grosholz have been asked to evaluate the SPD's "Drug Market Intervention Program" instituted in 2013 to target street-level dealers that sell drugs on corners.

The two met Friday with the City Commission's Independent Police Advisory Panel, which sets police policy, to give a briefing about the crackdown and kind of research they'll undertake in coming months, including an examination of police records, interviews with law enforcement and a review of similar programs nationally.

Later they'll present preliminary findings and recommendations before submitting a full report to the Police Department. The study is expected to last several months.

Sarasota is not paying for the study. After developing preliminary findings, Ngo and Grosholz said they'll seek academic grants to fund the remaining work.

Sarasota staffer graduates from Commanders Academy

TALLAHASSEE -- Capt. David Parisi, commander of the Support Services Bureau, has completed the academy at the Florida Sheriffs Association headquarters in Tallahassee.

The academy was developed in conjunction with the Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute.

Training included two one-week sessions in March and April. Topics included leadership, ethics, legislative affairs, effective discipline, labor and personnel issues, fiscal administration, the civil process, courthouse security and jail management.
