State Supreme Court justice to appear at LWV luncheon

Peggy Quince has ties to Bradenton

MANATEE -- The League of Women Voters of Manatee County invites the public to attend its annual meeting luncheon 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 9 at the Bradenton Country Club, 4646 Ninth Ave W.

The lunch program will feature a talk by Florida Supreme Court Justice Peggy Quince. Quince has had a long and distinguished law career, culminating in 1998, when she was appointed by agreement of both then-Governor Lawton Chiles and Gov-elect Jeb Bush, to the Florida Supreme Court -- the first African American woman to sit on this court.

"She had to work hard and struggle, but her strength and determination to succeed make her one of the greatest success stories in Florida women's history," said Rosalie Shaffer, president of the LWVMC. She also has Bradenton roots, having operated a law practice here in 1978-80.

Quince's talk will focus on: "What's At Stake: A Fair and Impartial Judiciary," including discussion of the role of the judiciary in a democracy; proposed changes to the appointment process, and our role as citizens

The charge for the lunch and program is $35 for LWV members; $40 for nonmembers. Reserve by April 4 by using the form at: lwvmanatee.org, or call 941-729-9248.
