Heritage Days to include beard, mustache event

MANATEE -- Heritage Days Open House is set for 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at Manatee Village Historical Park, 1404 Manatee Ave. E., in Bradenton.

The heritage event will include entertainment, Civil War re-enactors, photo booth, heritage artisans, art and food vendors and the first HAIRitage Days Beard and Mustache competition presented by the Manatee County Historical Commission.

The Beard and Mustache Competition is a fundraiser to support future public programs and historic preservation projects at Manatee Village Historical Park.

Registration fee is $5. Contestants may preregister or register at the festival.

Admission and parking are free.

Bernie Sanders march set Feb. 27 in Sarasota

SARASOTA -- March for Bernie 2 for presidential candidate Bernie Sanders will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 27 in downtown Sarasota as part of a nationwide day of marches for the candidate.

All groups and organizations need to preregister.

Participants will gather at noon at Links Plaza Park (southwest corner of Main Street and Links Avenue) and proceed to the "Unconditional Surrender" statue in Island Park with stops along Main Street.

SCF dental hygiene clinic seeks new patients

BRADENTON -- State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota's dental hygiene clinic is accepting new patients at 5840 26th St. W., building two.

The clinic gives students hands-on experience to work as dental hygienists after graduation. Clinic hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

Care is provided by SCF students under the supervision of licensed dental hygiene instructors and dentists who check the services provided to patients. Services include teeth cleanings, oral examinations, dental X-rays, fluoride and sealants to individuals 6 and older. The cost ranges from $10 per quadrant for sealants to $52 for adult complex cleanings with medicaments. No insurance is required.

SCF presents Latino Americans project

BRADENTON -- State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota Libraries will offer a presentation of oral histories and a storytelling event in the Latino Americans: 500 Years of History project, "Noche de Cuentos/A Night of Stories," with bilingual professional storyteller Carrie Sue Ayvar beginning at 6:30 p.m. March 18 in the Library at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W., Building 8. The event is free and open to the public.

SCF Libraries still have openings for oral histories and families from Manatee and Sarasota counties are encouraged to record stories to share with the community. The SCF Libraries have many Latino-focused resources, including Informe Académico, a database of Spanish language periodicals, and "The Latino American Experience" (an ABC-Clio database) among others, as well as a vast collection of books and ebooks about Latino Americans and Latino issues. Members of the community with a public library card are able to access the book collections.
