Palmetto VFW plans benefit fish fry

PALMETTO -- Palmetto VFW Post 2488, 810 Sixth St W., will have a fish fry at noon Sunday to benefit veterans and build a high school for indigenous children in the central highlands of Guatemala.

Plates of fried or smoked fish, cheese grits, hushpuppies and slaw offered for $12. Sliders are three for $5.

Public invited to LWR-Sarasota Elks open house

EAST MANATEE -- Lakewood Ranch-Sarasota Elks Lodge No. 2855 is having an open house to benefit its planned new facility at 1 p.m. Saturday at 4908 Lena Road.

Live entertainment by Robert & Wolfie from 2-6 p.m. followed by IPA 7-10 p.m. Also planned: 50/50 raffles, hamburgers, hot dogs and variety of soups.

The lodge will be open to the public. In January, the application fee to join the lodge is $1.
