PALMETTO -- Local youth are invited to test their grilling skills by attending a 4-H chicken barbecue and outdoor cooking workshop 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 4 at the Harllee 4-H Center on the Manatee County Fairgrounds, 1402 14th Ave. W., Palmetto. The workshop costs $5 and is open to all youth ages 11-18 as of Sept. 1, 2015.

At the workshop, participants will learn how to select and cut up a chicken while perfecting their grilling skills using charcoal. Participants must bring their own grill, charcoal and utensils, as well as a bag lunch.

Also at the workshop, youth will learn the guidelines for the county and state contests. The purpose of the 4-H chicken barbecue program is:

To develop leadership talents and to work toward achieving the broad objectives of developing sound character and effective citizenship.

To acquire scientific knowledge and improved understanding of the economy, versatility and nutritional value of chicken broiler meat and its relationship to human nutrition and health.

To help youth develop skills in the preparation and use of chicken and to acquire the ability to express their ideas proficiently and efficiently through participation in projects, talks, discussions, demonstrations and exhibits.

ANNA MARIA ISLAND -- The Anna Maria Island Privateers announce the opening of their pirate-style flea market 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Jan. 9 on Coquina Beach.

Thieves Market is a fundraiser for the Privateers mission of helping kids and community.

Michael Eisner to kick off Ringling town hall series

SARASOTA -- Michael Eisner, CEO of the Disney Co. from 1984 to 2005, will kick off the 2016 Ringling College Town Hall Lecture Series on Jan. 19. Eisner is replacing former Israeli President Shimon Peres, who canceled his appearance due to unforeseen circumstances.

The 2016 Town Hall series, which is presented by the Ringling College Library Association, also will include Jim Messina and Karl Rove (Feb. 3), Robin Roberts (March 7) and retired U.S. Army Gen. David Petraus (March 15).
