Tickets for USF beer-food pairing on sale

MANATEE -- Last semester's beer and food pairing attracted about 85 people. This year's event looks to be larger with up to 150 guests, which is why University of South Florida, Sarasota-Manatee, is moving the function from the Culinary Innovation Lab in Lakewood Ranch to the main campus, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, from 5-8 p.m. Dec. 3.

Instructor Joe Askren of the College of Hospitality and Tourism Leadership and Ken Caswell of the College of Arts & Sciences have been teaching the science and art of beer making.

The culmination of a semester's worth of studies will be paired with a selection of prepared foods in an event dubbed "The Fall Semester Beer & Food Tasting Finale."

Chef Garry Colpitts, culinary service manager at CIL, will help students develop a menu of savory and even sweet dishes based on recommendations from Askren's students, who will create beer batches of 5 gallons each.

USF students lend hand to Elmira's Wildlife Sanctuary

SARASOTA -- University of South Florida, Sarasota-Manatee, students have packed boxes at a food bank, helped clean a day shelter for disadvantaged families and will focus their efforts on charity helping animals Saturday.

The group of about 30 students will lend a hand for five hours at Elmira's Wildlife Sanctuary in Wimauma as part of their "Service Saturday" commitment.

Kati Hinds, coordinator of student organizations and leadership, said the group heard about the South Hillsborough County-based sanctuary from a student who once helped out there. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the nonprofit tends to exotic and wild animals, including tigers, a bear, lion, cougar and several young wolves and rescue animals.

Best Nonprofit Partnership awarded $5,000 grant

MANATEE -- The Animal Rescue Coalition and the Humane Society of Sarasota County teamed to support an emergency medical fund benefiting both organizations. Their cooperation resulted in a $5,000 award by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County during the Giving Challenge, an annual online giving event that raised nearly $6.9 million in September for local charities.

"Working together in this joint campaign, Animal Rescue Coalition and the Humane Society of Sarasota County have created the kind of nonprofit partnership we hope to see in the Giving Challenge -- one that extends far beyond the 24-hour event to make a long-lasting difference in the community," said Susie Bowie, vice president for philanthropic education and marketing for the Community Foundation.

The EMF pays for rehabilitation of injured, abused, abandoned or sick animals so they can be adopted and live a safe and happy life. Without the EMF, these animals are most likely to be euthanized. Executive Director Gisele Pintchuck said ARC has spayed and neutered more than 40,000 animals and has provided medical care to countless others through the EMF.
