USF Sarasota-Manatee gearing up to get 'Uncorked'

SARASOTA -- The Clearwater Beach Uncorked Food & Wine Festival relies on backstage workers from University of South Florida, Sarasota-Manatee, to help pull off the two-day festival.

"It's a lot of hard work but definitely a lot of fun for the students, and a learning experience," said Joe Askren, an instructor at the College of Hospitality and Tourism Leadership.

Spring semester students will help at the fifth annual food and drink fest by helping vendors and organizers. Askren, who teaches an event management class, said he'll soon organize a sign-up sheet for student volunteers. He's planning to divide up to 75 students to vendors and table locations.

More than 3,500 patrons are expected at the Feb. 6-7 gala, which would make it the largest Uncorked yet.

Organizer Tammy Gail, owner of Floridata Market Research, said a larger 30,000-square-foot tent would cover the 65 or so vendors expected behind the Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa.

Cat Depot recognizes National Feral Cat Day

SARASOTA -- Cat Depot, a rescue organization, will celebrate National Feral Cat Day by working with animal advocates and providing spay or neuter services to 16 feral cats from a local colony.

Cat Depot has spayed or neutered more than 1,000 cats, including 500 feral cats, since opening the Rose Durham Cat Care Clinic in November 2014. While under anesthesia for the surgeries, feral cats also receive treatment for parasites, rabies and distemper vaccines, microchip, ear tip, abdominal tattoo, and cold laser treatments to the incision site to speed recovery. Any other additional medical or wound treatment needed is taken care of while the cats are under anesthesia.

Alley Cat Allies launched National Feral Cat Day on Oct. 16, 2001, to raise awareness about feral cats and promote Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return.
