In the brilliant glow of a new morning, I pulled out of the driveway to make the habitual drive to work. Greeting me that morning was an unexpected passenger. A lizard peered through my windshield cautiously peeking over the wiper blades. Within a block, my cold-blooded friend was at my window, and in one quick jump, he gripped my steering wheel. For the 4-mile trip into work, there he rode, clutching the wheel tightly. When I turned left, he ran to the right. When I steered to the right, he went scurried to the left. If I did not know better, I would say he drove the truck to the Bradenton Herald parking lot. Putting the truck into park provided the little guy with the prime opportunity to escape. Like a game of hopscotch, the lizard jumped on me, the seat, the door and onto the parking pavement below. I will say, the fastest he went that morning was not in the old Ford F-150, but across the parking lot as fast as his little legs could go, and he definitely got better gas mileage, too.GRANT JEFFERIES/Bradenton Herald
