Lions to walk for National White Cane Safety Day

PALMETTO -- The Ellenton-Parrish Lions Club is sponsoring a short walk for the National White Cane Safety Day at 9 a.m. Oct. 14 in Palmetto.

Lions Club members will meet the mayor at City Hall, 516 Eighth Ave. W., and walk to the Riverside Cafe, 955 Riverside Drive to make the public aware of Florida statutes that require drivers to stop for persons crossing the street carrying a white cane or walking stick or using a guide dog.

Representatives from Division of Blind Services, Manasota Lighthouse, Southeastern Guide Dogs and the Lions organization will be there.

Third-annual 'Safe Kids Fair' set Oct. 10 in Bradenton

BRADENTON -- The Bradenton Police Department will partner with several local businesses, community organizations, public safety agencies and Westminster Presbyterian Church for the third annual "Safe Kids Fair" from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 10 at 3011 19th Ave. W.

The emphasis is on children between 5 and 11 years old.

Public safety agencies of Bradenton and Manatee County will provide free information on bicycle, home, pool and beach safety.

The Society of Retired FBI Agents will provide child identification kits. Home Depot will demonstrate projects youngsters can build. A Bayflite helicopter will be on display with the Bradenton Police Department SWAT Armored Rescue Vehicle.

Free items will be distributed from businesses with raffle prizes, food and refreshments available.
