Bealls begins ‘Save Our Gulf’ campaign

BRADENTON — Bealls Department Stores is putting its retail punch behind raising funds to support the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation’s effort to study and restore damaged ecosystems and fish resources.

The store, which carries the Guy Harvey line of sport shirts, is marketing a “Save Our Gulf” T-shirt along with tumblers with the sale proceeds going to the foundation. Bealls is hoping to raise $150,000 by Dec. 31. There are several brands of the shirts being sold with a price range of $9.98 for children and ranging up to $19.98.

“When the fear of the oil started threatening our Gulf shores, we started worrying about the impact on our customers,” said Mary Beth Fox, vice president of marketing and advertising for Bealls. “We called our vendors and developed our Save Our Gulf line.”

Bealls is working with the Guy Harvey Foundation, which is designed to fund research that looks at answers to how the oil is impacting the Gulf fisheries. Tervis Tumbler in Venice is also producing Save Our Gulf drinking tumblers that will be sold in the department stores.

“We depend on the Gulf and are very proud of what it has to offer us,” Fox said.

The T-shirts went on sale July 15 and the response so far has been “phenomenal,” she said.

Bealls is also selling a $3 pass to customers to receive 15 percent off on purchases made July 27 and 28. Fox said 100 percent of the $3 will go to the foundation.
