Driver dies after crash flips SUV on I-275 in Manatee County, FHP says

State troopers say a fatal interstate crash happened in Manatee County on Saturday after one driver tried to go around another.

The crash happened around 10:08 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 275, approaching the Sunshine Skyway Bridge toll plaza, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say a 28-year-old Palmetto man was driving an SUV west in the left lane near mile marker 5, where U.S. 19 merges with I-275.

A 54-year-old North Port woman was driving an SUV directly behind him, FHP said.

Troopers say the North Port woman accelerated and entered the right lane to go around the Palmetto man before she “abruptly veered” her SUV back into the left lane, cutting him off.

However, the SUVs collided in the process, FHP said.

The Palmetto man’s SUV traveled onto an inside shoulder and crashed into a guardrail, the agency said.

Troopers say the North Port woman “overcorrected” her SUV after the crash, and it rotated onto an outside grass shoulder and overturned multiple times.

The woman was thrown from the vehicle, and emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene, the agency said.

The Palmetto man and three juvenile passengers in his vehicle were not injured, troopers said.

The crash remains under investigation, according to FHP.
