Need sandbags? Manatee County to offer free distribution, delivery this week

Manatee County residents who want to start hurricane preparation can get free sandbags this week.

The county is hosting “Operation Sandbag,“ a free drive-thru sandbag distribution event from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, June 26 at the Public Safety Complex, 2101 47th Terrace East, Bradenton.

Manatee County residents will be eligible to receive up to 10 sandbags per household during the event, and some residents may also be able to get sandbags delivered to their homes.

For residents who are 60 years of age or older, transportation dependent and live in Flood Zones A or B, the county is offering a free delivery service of 10 sandbags per household.

Interested residents can request the delivery through an online form. The form asks residents to input their address and contact information to screen for eligibility.

“By working together, we’re helping remove barriers and making sure residents who may need extra assistance have access to resources that can help them prepare for potential flooding,” Manatee County Director of Community and Veterans Services Sarah Brown said in a press release.

The deliveries will begin Friday afternoon and continue as needed, according to the county.

“Preparedness is one of the easiest ways residents can help protect their homes and families during hurricane season,” Commission Chair Tal Siddique said in a press release. “We encourage residents to take advantage of this opportunity and make a plan before a storm is in the forecast.”

The Atlantic hurricane season started on June 1 and lasts through Nov. 30. For more information about hurricane preparedness — including sandbag locations during hurricane season — and to learn your evacuation zone, visit mymanatee.org/storm or call 311.
