Bradenton woman killed by wrong-way driver on Interstate 75, FHP says
A Bradenton woman died and several other people were seriously hurt when a wrong-way driver hit their vehicles on Interstate 75 early Sunday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened around 1:13 a.m. on I-75 North, near mile marker 150 in Charlotte County, the agency said in a news release.
Troopers say Dennis Lee Olson, a 53-year-old Sarasota man, got on the interstate driving the wrong way in a Ford F-150. As the truck traveled southbound in the northbound lanes, it hit a Kia sedan and a Honda SUV, the agency said.
A Tesla sedan then collided with debris from the crash, FHP said.
Troopers say the driver of the Honda, a 21-year-old Bradenton woman, died at the scene.
A 34-year-old Arcadia woman who was driving the Kia and her passengers, a 12-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy, were all sent to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, FHP said.
The driver of the Tesla, a 19-year-old Sarasota woman, was uninjured, the release said.
Troopers say Olsen had “non-incapacitating” injuries after the crash, and emergency responders took him to a nearby hospital. After his release, troopers arrested him on charges of vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter and booked him into the Charlotte County Jail, the release said.
The crash remains under investigation, FHP said.
