Manatee County teen on e-bike hit by SUV, airlifted to hospital, FHP says

A teenager on an electric bicycle was hit by an SUV in Manatee County on Thursday morning and had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

At 7:10 a.m., a 17-year-old boy from Palmetto was driving a Chevy SUV in the eastbound right turn lane of Erie Road, approaching Fort Hamer Road, the agency said in a news release.

A 17-year-old boy from Manatee County was traveling west on an electric bicycle “within the south marked crosswalk of the intersection of Erie Road and Fort Hamer Road,” FHP said.

Troopers say the SUV driver failed to yield to the bicyclist, who had the right-of-way, and attempted to make a right turn.

The vehicle collided with the teenager on the e-bike, and he was “transported by air ambulance to HCA Florida Blake Hospital in serious condition,” the release said.

FHP says they are continuing to investigate this crash.
