2 men injured in Sarasota head-on crash with cement truck, troopers say

Two men were in a crash when a Porsche SUV collided with the cement truck Friday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

At 9:33 a.m., a 38-year-old Palmetto man was driving a cement truck on State Road 72 near Churchill Downs Road, when a 70-year-old Sarasota man, driving a Porsche SUV, “veered into the direct path” the truck, according to an FHP news release.

The Sarasota man was driving eastbound on SR 72, while the cement truck was travelling westbound. The fronts of the two vehicles collided in the crash, the release said.

After impact, the Porsche was sent off the street and came to a rest in the roadway’s south ditch, troopers say. The cement truck overturned and stopped laying on its right side on the opposite end of the pavement, according to FHP.

Both men were transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. The driver of the Porsche was in critical condition, and the Palmetto man sustained minor injuries, according to the release.

The crash remains under investigation as of Friday afternoon, the release said.
