DeSantis orders flags at half-staff as Manatee hosts Commissioner Felts memorial
Officials will host a public memorial service and fly flags at half-staff Saturday in honor of the late Commissioner Carol Ann Felts.
Felts died at the age of 68 on Feb. 24. She served as the District 1 commissioner, and the Myakka City resident represented over 77,000 people in Myakka City, Parrish and parts of Ellenton and Palmetto after beginning her first public office term in 2024.
Now, the county is aiming to recognize her career in public service by officially dedicating a portion of David J. Crane Park in Myakka City to her, naming it the Carol Ann Billberry Felts Preserve.
To further honor the late commissioner, Gov. Ron DeSantis released an order for all flags at the State Capitol in Tallahassee, as well as in Manatee County, to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Saturday.
Felts’ memorial service will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. at David J. Crane Park, 37655 State Road 70 E. in Myakka City. It will include a video presentation, a commemorative sign unveiling, remarks from Commission Chairman Tal Siddique, Commissioner Amanda Ballard and Felts’ family. There will also be a ceremonial whip cracking by the Florida Cracker Trail Association, according to a news release.
“Commissioner Felts dedicated her life to serving this community with passion, integrity and a deep love for Manatee County,” Siddique said. “This preserve stands as a lasting reminder of her impact and the legacy she leaves behind for generations to come.”
“We are also grateful to Governor Ron DeSantis for approving the half-staff tribute in recognition of her service to the people of Florida,” Siddique continued.
The county says this preserve dedication will be a “lasting tribute to Commissioner Felts’ contributions and commitment to the county.”
The county also says the public is invited to attend the event and “join in honoring Commissioner Felts’ legacy and dedication to serving the residents of Manatee County.”
