New pizzeria opens in Manatee. It has New York eats and family recipes

A new pizzeria has opened in Parrish.

Sal Candela and his family are operating 5 Boroughs Pizza, opening the pizzeria at 8255 U.S. 301 on Jan. 21 in the restaurant space that was previously home to Raven Pizza for 30 years, before it closed last summer.

“I kind of want to piggyback off the Raven legacy, but I don’t want to tie myself to the Raven name,” Candela said.

Originally from Middletown, New Jersey, Candela said he’s been making pizzas for 30 years. The family moved to the area in 2021, and they’re using family recipes that began in the 1960s.

The hand-tossed New York style pizzas have been popular among customers so far, Candela said.

“I’ve gotten good response on pizza, everything else is coming along,” Candela said.

Gourmet toppings, which include hot honey, fresh basil, roasted peppers, ricotta, extra cheese, meatballs and bacon cost $2 to $4.50 per topping, depending on how big the pizza is.

As of late January, the sign in front of the pizzeria still said Raven Pizza, but Candela said it will be replaced soon.

5 Boroughs Pizza is open daily. The hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
