Manatee County Government is developing a memorial park and resource center to honor veterans, and officials are asking residents to “help shape the future” of the property.

Valor Commons, a 24-acre property south of Buckeye Road and just west of Artisan Lakes Parkway in Palmetto, will feature community-driven memorials, armed forces installations, walking trails and serene spaces, according to Bill Logan, the information outreach officer with the county.

Officials say the purpose of Valor Commons will be to honor veterans and provide them with all the necessary resources to flourish in society after service, including critical counseling and other services that support their transitions.

“Valor Commons allows for many of these services to be housed or coordinated in one location,” Logan told the Bradenton Herald. “This co-location reduces back-office administration redundancy and duplication services between organizations, and lessens the burdens on veterans and their families.”

The county now asks the public to weigh in with a survey to help make it as beneficial to the veterans, their families and the public as possible.

The survey asks questions regarding what veteran services and educational opportunities one would most like to see included at Valor Commons, and it also asks what events residents would like to see hosted there.

Veterans park planned in Manatee County

As of January, Manatee County has allocated $4 million toward creating Valor Commons. Eventually, the property will be independently governed and managed by a nonprofit organization .

In terms of future goals, the county hopes that Valor Commons will be helpful to veterans and families in their integration from military life to life after service. Logan says those close to the project also hope that it helps “enhance the fabric of our community.”

“Veterans hear, ‘Thank you for your service,’ every day,” said Lee Washington, the veterans project manager. “Valor Commons embodies that thanks and welcomes them home!”

The School District of Manatee County recently voted to name a new school that is under construction nearby to Veterans Elementary School to match the tone of the Valor Commons project.

County officials are set to host a public groundbreaking for Valor Commons at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 5215 Buckeye Road, Palmetto.
