Bradenton students learn to make Thanksgiving pie with help from a celebrity chef
At Visible Men Academy, the ingredients for Thanksgiving pie include flour, butter, apples, 50 elementary-aged students and one celebrity chef.
Chef Marvin Woods guided small hands as they measured, rolled and mixed their way to creating holiday apple pies.
Woods has authored books, appeared on television and was the first chef to work on former First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign to teach families about healthy meal options.
As Melkis Ruiz, a fifth grader, tried unsuccessfully to scrape pie crust dough from his hands, Chef Woods moved along the countertop, helping each student.
On Thursday, the boys made pies for each other and planned to make pies to take home to their families Friday, said the school’s principal, Dr. Janjay Gehndyu.
“We’re changing it up a little this year,” said Gehndyu.
Visible Men Academy, a Title I charter school in Bradenton for K-5 boys from low-income families, will have a new location in early 2025 when it begins sharing space with Just For Girls, the Bradenton Herald previously reported.
