The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an unidentified person whose body was discovered in Miguel Bay, according to a news release.

The sheriff’s office said a boater discovered a “badly decomposed” body on Saturday in shallow water near Rattlesnake Key, but a current carried the body away before deputies were able to recover it.

The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office aviation unit and marine deputies later found the body on Sunday morning after an “extensive search” on the shoreline of Rattlesnake Key, according to the release.

Detectives said they did not find any identifying information with the body. The sheriff’s office is working to determine how long the body was in the water and where it came from, a news release said.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy on the remains Monday afternoon, where officials hope to begin the process of confirming gender and cause of death, according to the release.

The death investigation is ongoing, according to the sheriff’s office. Further information was not immediately available Monday morning.
